Broombusters are in the ‘Ville-Cut Broom in Bloom
For those of you who are already familiar with the invasive species, you know that our island is highly vulnerable to the growth of this woody weed. It grows rapidly, crowds out native plants, prevents the regrowth of forests, and leads to a dramatic loss of diversity. Thankfully, anyone can get involved in helping remove this big bad weed with the tireless initiative of the Broombusters Invasive Plant Society.
Broombusters Invasive Plant Society, a registered non-profit, is dedicated to containing the spread of Scotch broom through community education and action. Annually, 600-700 volunteers devote 5000-6000 hours cutting broom across Vancouver Island and the BC lower mainland. This year, the District of Lantzville is once again partnering with Broombusters to combat Scotch broom in our area. They're seeking volunteers to assist in this vital effort. Whether you can spare just an hour or two, you can borrow loppers to cut broom on your own or join in on community cuts. By joining forces with fellow residents, you'll not only help protect our environment from this invasive plant but also enjoy some outdoor time. Keep an eye out for online announcements and neighborhood signs with dates and times. For more information, to borrow loppers, or to join the email list, contact Sharon at sahokas@shaw.ca.
