Lantzville District Council to Protect land for Future Old-Growth zones
Recent news coverage by Times Colonist and Chek News has highlighted The Foothills continued commitment, with support from Lantzville’s council, to preserve future old-growth (or FOG’s) forest areas in our community. With a unanimous vote in favour of the new bylaw, two areas totaling 10-15 acres located in the Foothills will be indefinitely protected once approved in the coming weeks.

Lantzville is preparing to establish havens for future old-growth forests, where big West Coast trees can thrive for hundreds of years.
The district plans to set up two such areas within its rugged and scenic Foothills park land, donated by developer Lone Tree Properties, under a new “future old growth” (FOG) zone that would be permanently -protected.
Council members have voted unanimously in favour of the first two readings of the new bylaw, and a public hearing is set for April 10. Coun. Joan Jones called the plan “truly forward thinking.”
Planned new FOG zones are in environmentally -sensitive habitat and were already earmarked by the district’s official community plan for preservation.
With quotes from local community members, people in this community care for the environment immensely and ultimately are in support of these FOG zones being preserved for centuries to come.

Lantzville resident Mike Thomas says he welcomes the news from the Lantzville council.
“It’s a start,” Thomas told CHEK News.
Living on Lantzville’s waterfront brings Thomas a bounty of beautiful sights everyday. But he has one favourite feature in his yard that he said he would do anything to protect.
“This tree out here is 750-years-old,” said Thomas, pointing to a towering Douglas Fir on Monday.
According to Thomas, he estimates the tree to be 750-years-old due to growth rings he counted on one that was felled next to it years ago.
To permanently protect these zones for future generations to celebrate and enjoy as the community grows, everyone wins.

“We hope in a few hundred years that future generations will look back and be grateful that this was done and set aside,” said Lantzville Coun. Ian Savage
