Top Fall and Winter Activities Around the Foothills

Fall on Vancouver Island is a wonderful time to explore the outdoors and really take in the nature that surrounds our dwellings. There is no shortage of activities to get outside and explore what the Central Island has to offer. Whether it is a leisurely walk or hike to take in the autumn colours, a seasonal farmers market or some west coast, fishing, biking or camping, we’re lucky to live in the middle of it all. While there are endless fall activities to explore in and around Foothills, we’ve picked our top five things to do during this season and wanted to share them with you:

Superior Farms - A lovely seven minute drive from The Foothills, you will stumble into the quaint Superior Farms. Lantzville’s very own miniature farm animal oasis that includes one of the best hidden luxury retail stores, petting farm great for the little ones and a garden centre with a number of soon to sell holiday workshops, events and more

Silver Meadows Farm Market Ltd. - Just north of The Foothills is Errington which is home to Silver Meadows Farm Market Ltd. Don’t let the name fool you! In addition to the farm market filled with fresh produce, you will find a pumpkin patch, corn maze, hayrides and petting farm. During the fall, they are open seven days a week and hosting hayrides and the petting farm only on weekends. For all the families of young ones, this tops our family friendly activity list!

Nanaimo River - Islanders know, our rivers thrive in the fall! You are almost always guaranteed to see wildlife in their natural habitat by visiting the Nanaimo River. Whether it’s for a stroll down one of the many trails lining the river or a sit and take it all in visit, you’ll note moments from our natural ecosystem including the salmon run that happens every fall.

Wine & Food Tour - For a longer day or weekend trip, up and down Vancouver Island you can find a number of different wine and food tours to enjoy. Cowichan Valley is home to fourteen wineries (and one amazing cidery). Given the Cowichan Valley is on route to Victoria, you can book a half-day Victoria to Cowichan guided wine tour to take in all the south island has to offer.

Also on the way to Victoria, you can find Merridale Cidery and Distillery located in Cobble Hill. The perfect place to visit in autumn with their award winning cider and spirits. They follow nature's lead and serve up food and drinks tailored to the season. You can also take a stroll around their apple vineyard that makes for the perfect photo opportunity
