Welcome back to our Residents of The Foothills series, where we celebrate the remarkable individuals helping to shape the legacy of The Foothills community. It’s the people of today who are building the foundation for an even brighter tomorrow.
This edition features Cathy and Richard Wohl, who may look a little familiar. Last May we featured their incredible home in our Homes of The Foothills series. This time, we wanted to learn more about themselves, their adorable dog Mocha and how life in the Foothills is treating them.
Have you been “islanders” for long? Where did you live before calling Vancouver Island home?
Richard: I’ve lived on the Island since the spring of 2016. I moved from North Vancouver. Cathy is relatively new to the island in the past year or so. Cathy moved from South Surrey.
What drove you to choose The Foothills community?
Cathy: We were looking for a unique community where the houses are new, had interesting architecture and of course exceptional views.
In what ways have you adapted to living here? Any notable changes to your lifestyle?
Richard: Our street has a real sense of community. We find ourselves planning and spending time with our neighbours on a regular basis. Cathy and I find ourselves gazing at the view and enjoy watching the marine activity.
What have you enjoyed about the surrounding area since moving here?
Cathy: We truly live in a unique area. We love the fact that you can head out our door with Mocha (our loving, four legged companion) and be on an expansive mountain side trail system where we rarely come across others. Many times we enjoy our own private forest or so it seems.
What is something you like to show off to friends and family when they visit The Foothills?
Richard: I would be lying if I didn’t point to the view. We get to watch the ships go by, and the eagles soaring nearby.
What are your favourite destinations on Vancouver Island to visit?
Cathy: We enjoy visiting wineries. Despite our relatively cool climate, the Island wineries manage to produce some very nice wines.
How old is your dog, Mocha? Tell us a little about her!
Richard: Mocha is going on six, but don’t tell her that! She loves to run. I always say she has two speeds, full out or sleeping. She is a very friendly, gentle dog that just wants to meet everyone and believes everyone wants to meet her.
If Mocha could choose their favourite thing about life in The Foothills, what would you say it is?
Cathy: I think Mocha would say it’s the “freedom” she has when walking/running and sniffing on the trails. It is like no other place in this area.
Where is your favourite place to dine that is close by?
Richard: We are an uncomplicated couple. Although we enjoy fine dining, we really enjoy simple, well-prepared food in an inviting and casual atmosphere. Of course, I’m referring to the Lantzville Pub.
What Are You Most Excited About With The Whole Development Of The Foothills?
Both: We believe that the Foothills would significantly benefit from the development of “The Village”. The amazing trail system gets Mocha’s vote. And, yes, we did consult with her on this one. The Foothills development is an amazing place to live but it certainly would feel more like a community if there was a place where you could go and meet your neighbours on the patio or in a coffee shop. We have a sense of this in our small local street group but there are many others we have not met and a village gathering spot would help to facilitate that.
